Keeping current in fast-changing world: DigitalMailer celebrates 10 years of helping credit unions reach members across multiple communication channels

From emails sent shotgun style to personalized "drip" email-marketing campaigns, and from generic notices delivered via mass email lists to tailored mobile alerts delivered in seconds, DigitalMailer, Inc. has been at the forefront of changes in communications technology over the past decade.

Today, DigitalMailer serves more than 180 financial institutions and offers nine digital-communication products. It is the second-largest independent provider of electronic statements in the credit union industry.

"In the 10 years since opening our doors in 2000, DigitalMailer has delivered over 15.9 million eStatements and more than 24 million email messages, saving our clients tens of millions of dollars and helping them grow their business," said Ron Daly, President/Chief Executive Officer.

Since first opening its doors in 2000 with eStatements - then a revolutionary product - Daly says DigitalMailer has seen innumerable technology changes and enhancements enter the marketplace. The company adapted the best of these and expanded its product line to help credit unions grow their business. Over the years, new products included email alerts, eSurveys, secure web forms, and eMarketing campaigns. Now, DigitalMailer works with credit unions to develop customized online document-management programs, disaster-communication systems, "green" solutions and automated marketing strategies.

"We built DMI by listening and creating solutions that fed off the 'you can't do that here' attitudes of entrenched competitors," Daly said. "We still listen to our marketplace, deploying products and services that help solve their problems. Retooling our products to fit their needs versus making them fit into our box."

"Although eStatements were first, we always knew technology was fast-evolving and had the possibility of bringing new communication options to credit unions," Daly said. "It's been important to evolve with the technology."

Daly credits the company's staff expertise and ingenuity, as well as its sophisticated technology, for DigitalMailer's success over the past 10 years. "Our people and technology are allowing us to overtake other providers in its two major product lines and win deals the size of which we could once only imagine."

After 10 years in business, Daly says he has learned some important lessons, among them the importance of forming strategic partnerships. "We know our strengths and expertise - and we don't try to be what we're not. By collaborating with a number of CUSOs, service providers and other organizations, we enhance our abilities and broaden our experience to the benefit of our clients."

Another lesson: the importance of deliverability. "Of the estimated 247 billion emails sent each day, 20 percent never reach the inbox - and that equals wasted dollars and opportunities," said Daly. "In this business, it's vitally important to have measures in place that help get the right emails to the right inboxes. Through our email engine and certified delivery system, more than 95 percent of messages sent arrive as planned."

With a decade of fast change and innovation behind them, Daly and DigitalMailer are ready to embrace the future. "Persistence and determination seem to have made DigitalMailer a success - maybe not defined exactly in the way the 2000 business plan projected it, but definitely a success," Daly said. "As the past has shown, no one can predict all that lies ahead in technology, but we'll be watching - ready to help credit unions use technology to communicate as effectively as possible."
