Herndon, Va., and Hagerstown, Md. (Oct. 23, 2008) – This fall's rash of hurricanes underscores the importance of quickly communicating with employees and members when faced with a looming storm or other crisis that could affect credit union operations. So, when Fay, Gustav and Ike slammed into coastal communities in late summer, credit unions relied on DigitalMailer, Inc. to help alert employees and members to the status of their branches, and provide other important information. Meanwhile, at Ongoing Operations, LLC, staff was assisting credit unions to ensure their critical operations were up and running, including the recovery, backup and connectivity services needed to remain open.
DigitalMailer and Ongoing Operations discovered a natural fit between their contingency services, and began exploring where they could work together. Enter DigitalMailer's online Crisis Management Notification System (CMNS). The CMNS enables credit unions to transmit urgent text and email messages to employees in a matter of minutes, making one less item management has to worry about. The system trades labor-intensive calling trees and paging systems with a high-speed platform that automatically delivers messages to recipients via email, text, PDA or smart phones. The CMNS built-in response mechanism instantly keeps track of those employees still "missing" to allow for additional follow-up.
"DigitalMailer's Crisis Notification System enhances Ongoing Operations' business continuity services and is a natural fit," said Kirk Drake, the CUSO's president/CEO. "The CMNS will complement our ability to help keep credit unions going in case of any unforeseen event and communicate with employees during any disaster. We believe our two CUSOs offering our solutions together makes sense and makes credit unions' decision-making process easier."
Ongoing Operations ensures that millions of credit union members worldwide have access to their accounts, regardless of the circumstances. "With numerous pieces to the business-continuity puzzle, we offer the flexibility that allows credit unions to choose from options that best meet their risk-tolerance levels and information-technology infrastructure," Drake said. "Just as important is credit unions' ability to interact with their employees and members."
Ron Daly, president/chief executive officer of DigitalMailer, says it's vitally important to plan for operational needs. "With hurricanes and other emergencies, there are a million things a disaster team needs to worry about and always unexpected issues to deal with," he said. "In an emergency, traditional communication methods may not be accessible or reliable. But with email and text messages, employees can access messages on their laptops or mobile phones and respond appropriately no matter where they are. The CMNS certainly enhances the effectiveness of disaster communications, gets the word out immediately and, more importantly, can track responses. After all, what CEO out there doesn't want to know that all of his or her employees are accounted for and safe in an emergency?"
