Washington, D.C. and Herndon, Va. (July 9, 2009) - Two CUSOs - Callahan Credit Union Financial Services Limited Partnership (CUFSLP) and DigitalMailer, Inc. - have joined forces to help credit unions better plan for communication during emergencies.
The announcement follows the recent NCUA Letter to Credit Unions 09-CU-13, which discusses the need to review and update credit union business-continuity and disaster-recovery plans. NCUA expressed that this is particularly important in the wake of 2009 predictions from the National Hurricane Center and pandemic events related to swine flu.
Maintaining effective communication - before, during and after a crisis - is vital. Credit unions need a reliable way to keep in touch with various groups, including members, volunteers, employees and regulators. CUFSLP, through its partnership with DigitalMailer, now offers credit unions the Crisis Management Notification System (CMNS). Designed by DigitalMailer to automatically deliver messages to whatever communication devices people have at hand, CMNS relays messages to groups in a matter of minutes, offers multiple email, text message and outbound calling capabilities, and includes delivery tracking and confirmation.
"Communication in business-continuity planning is critical - and traditional models like phone trees are not always the quickest way to contact your employees or members," said Jon Jeffreys, Vice President at Callahan Financial Services, general partner of CUFSLP. "Email and texting unquestionably enhance the effectiveness of communication."
DigitalMailer's President/Chief Executive Officer, Ron Daly agrees. "We know an important component of any crisis plan is communication. But in emergencies, conventional communication methods may not be accessible or reliable" said Daly. "Credit unions need a way for fast, accurate information exchange with members and staff, and we help to ensure that they can communicate during crises."
CUFSLP is comprised of 40 of the nation's leading credit unions and seeks to provide innovation, collaboration and thought leadership to the credit union industry nationwide.
DigitalMailer, the digital communications and online marketing firm, works with a number of credit unions to improve communication strategies within business-contingency plans. Many of its clients are located in hurricane-prone areas - and several implemented DigitalMailer's CMNS during last year's storm warnings and evacuations.
"With the 2009 hurricane season upon us, combined with the ongoing effects of the swine flu virus, we all are reminded of the importance of maintaining clear, accessible channels to keep connected with employees, members, and others during contingencies," said Daly. "Incorporating digital communications in these plans is a proven strategy."
